Highlights from the past year of GKO research

Global Kids Online has been gathering new evidence on children’s online opportunities and risks via representative surveys in the Philippines, Uruguay, and Ghana. This adds to the existing database from seven other countries. The members of the network have also spent the year working on maximising the impact from the research findings.

Brazil: 24.3 million children are now online

The Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) just launched the results of the latest ICT Kids Online Brazil survey, conducted annually since 2012. Based on home-based computer-assisted interviews with 2,999 children and their parent or guardian, the survey highlights key issues related to internet access, online opportunities, and safe internet use.

Working on knowledge exchange and impact

The LSE Department of Media and Communications and UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti recently hosted a meeting of the Global Kids Online network which offered an opportunity for researchers from Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America to discuss research dissemination challenges and share local experiences of working effectively with stakeholders to maximise research impact.

Global Kids Online fieldwork in Uruguay has started

Uruguay is embarking on innovative research on children’s online experiences as part of the Global Kids Online network in Latin America. The Kids Online study is conducted with the joint effort of UNICEF – United Nations Children’s Fund – Plan Ceibal, UNESCO, AGESIC, and the Universidad Católica del Uruguay.

Preparations for the 6th Brazilian Kids Online survey

The Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) has already started preparing the 6th edition of the Brazilian Kids Online survey which will provide more in-depth information on children’s online activities and digital skills. The preparations include conducting cognitive interviews with children and organizing stakeholder events.

Global Kids Online Uruguay

Uruguay has been conducting innovative research on children’s online experiences as part of the Global Kids Online network in Latin America. The Kids Online study is carried out with the joint effort of UNICEF – United Nations Children’s Fund – Plan Ceibal, UNESCO, AGESIC, and the Universidad Católica del Uruguay. The fieldwork took place from July to September 2017 and explored the online experiences of children aged 9 to 17.
