2018: more research, new findings and further impact

With new findings from Brazil, Ghana and Uruguay emerging during the year, Global Kids Online has now surveyed over 15,000 children and 12,000 of their carers since 2016, continuing to emphasise the important role of children as active agents in the global digital environment. With new research in Albania, Canada, Montenegro, New Zealand and the Philippines underway, as well as research impact assessments in four Global Kids Online countries, the quest for expanding the evidence base continues.
Developing an impact case study of Global Kids Online

UNICEF-Innocenti and LSE commissioned an independently-verified impact case study of the Global Kids Online network aiming to validate early emerging impact claims. Commencing in November 2018, the study draws on in-depth evidence from four research sites in Argentina, Bulgaria, Ghana and Uruguay, as well as a review of the activities of the whole network.
Research on teachers’ internet use in Montenegro

Global Kids Online research conducted with children and parents in Montenegro in 2016 indicated that schools need to become leaders in the process of preparing the future digital citizens. UNICEF Montenegro, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Ipsos, is currently piloting a survey on teachers’ internet use, skills, and practices which will help to develop digital literacy education in Montenegrin schools.
Global Kids Online Canada

The eQuality Project – a seven year SSHRC-funded partnership of scholars, research and policy institutes, policymakers, educators, community organizations, and youth – will launch the Canadian Kids Online Project in 2018 with collaboration from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC), and UNICEF Canada. It will focus on the online experiences of Canadian youth, as well as their knowledge of online privacy, and how that affects their online experiences.
EU Kids Online is conducting a new survey in Europe

The EU Kids Online network sets out to provide new empirical evidence on children’s and young people’s online experiences, following the large-scale comparative survey conducted in 2010 in 25 countries. Eleven European counties have already started praparing for the new research which introduces additional topics, such as cyberhate, discrimination and violent extremism, cyber-bystanders, digital citizenship, e-health, and the internet of things.
Global Kids Online fieldwork in Uruguay has started

Uruguay is embarking on innovative research on children’s online experiences as part of the Global Kids Online network in Latin America. The Kids Online study is conducted with the joint effort of UNICEF – United Nations Children’s Fund – Plan Ceibal, UNESCO, AGESIC, and the Universidad Católica del Uruguay.
