Engaging children’s voices and experiences in research

The Global Kids Online research model invites researchers and research users to adopt a child-centred approach which sees children as rights-holders and citizens, able to actively shape the online domain and able to exercise agency in the digital environment. We aim to explore children’s ability to seek and offer support, create coping strategies and build resilience, and even act as agents in their families or communities by introducing online activities or helping their families and peers.

Chile: a third of children do not use the internet at school

A two-day conference on ‘The Challenges of a Digital Society’ was held in Santiago earlier this month where the Global Kids Online team in Chile launched the new findings from a representative survey on children’s internet use. The study of 1,000 children aged 9 to 17 years found that a third of them do not use the internet at school.

Philippines: launching the representative survey
10th April 2017
The representative Global Kids Online survey in the Philippines was launched by UNICEF at workshop for government, industry, law enforcement agencies, and NGOs. The aim of the meeting was to initiate a collaboration for the protection of children against online sexual abuse and exploitation based on a common understanding among key actors on global best practices, tools, resources and industry standards.

Live online conversation about our research

Jasmina Byrne and Daniel Kardefelt-Winther from UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti had a live online conversation about the challenges of conducting the Global Kids Online project. They presented highlights from the recent findings and discussed our approach to carrying out global research on children’s rights in the digital age at a time of intense socio-technological change and contested policy development.

Highlights from 18 months of Global Kids Online
17th February 2017
The Global Kids Online team and partners from Argentina, Serbia, South Africa and the Philippines spent the last 18 months developing and testing a multi-method research toolkit. Researchers in Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Ghana, and Montenegro also joined in to conduct primary research asking children about their experiences on the internet and the contexts and consequence of internet use.

Bulgaria: Are children empowered to benefit from the internet?

New findings from Global Kids Online Bulgaria, launched today by the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre, reveal that children are spending more time online at increasingly younger ages. Even though many of them are technically competent and skilled internet users, few children take full advantage of the online opportunities or act in a proactive way.
